C1.3 — Beyond usability (HL)
Key concepts
Usability is about can the user do the task? Beyond usability asks a deeper question: how does the user feel about doing the task, and about the product they are doing it with?
A usable product is not necessarily a product people love. Hospital waiting-room chairs are technically usable but nobody enjoys them. A well-designed smartphone is usable and emotionally compelling. The difference matters — emotional response drives what users buy, what they keep, and what they recommend.
The four-pleasure framework
Usability asks whether a product works. The four-pleasure framework (Patrick Jordan, building on the anthropologist Lionel Tiger) asks what a product gives the user beyond function. Designers use it to decide deliberately which kinds of pleasure a product should trigger.

Physio-pleasure — the body and the senses: touch, smell, sound, taste, temperature, weight. The heft of a balanced kitchen knife, the click of a good switch, the smell of a new leather bag.

Socio-pleasure — relationships and social identity. Pleasure that comes from being with others, or from being seen as part of a group. A dining table, a games console with four controllers, a club shirt.

Psycho-pleasure — cognitive and emotional satisfaction during use. The task completes without frustration and leaves the user feeling competent. A checkout that takes three taps; software that never loses your work.

Ideo-pleasure — values, aspirations, and what owning the product says about your beliefs. A repairable phone, a plastic-free razor, a fair-trade material. Ideo-pleasure is about identity and ethics rather than sensation.
Most products trigger more than one, and the mix is a design decision rather than an accident. A Fairphone is engineered for ideo-pleasure (repairable, ethically sourced) and accepts a thicker, less refined body — a deliberate trade against physio-pleasure. A luxury car maker does the reverse, spending heavily on the sound of the door closing because that single physio-pleasure moment shapes the whole impression.
Note how closely physio-pleasure sits to ergonomics: smell, sound, touch, taste and the perception of texture are the same human factors covered in A1.1, used here for emotional effect rather than efficiency.
The attract / converse / transact (ACT) model
The ACT model frames the user–product relationship as three stages, each mapping to a quality the designer must deliver:

Attract — the product must first draw the user in. This is desirability: form, colour, finish, and the promise the product makes at a glance. Nothing else happens if this fails.

Converse — the "conversation" of use. The product responds, gives feedback, and behaves predictably. This is usability: the user and the product exchanging signals until the task is understood.

Transact — the user completes what they came to do, and the product delivers on the promise made at the attract stage. This is usefulness: the value actually exchanged.
The model is diagnostic as well as generative. A product that attracts but never converses is the beautiful appliance nobody can operate. One that converses and transacts but never attracts is the capable tool that sits unsold on the shelf. Asking which of the three stages is failing is usually faster than asking "why don't people like it?"
Because the model begins with attraction and ends with a completed transaction, it also has an inclusive-design dimension (C1.2): a product that only attracts, converses with, or is usable by part of its intended population fails ACT for everyone else.
Emotional design
Don Norman's three levels of emotional design (2004):

Visceral — the immediate gut response to appearance. Pre-cognitive. "That looks beautiful / scary / inviting." Shapes first impressions in milliseconds.

Behavioural — the response to use. "This is satisfying to hold / frustrating to open / elegant to operate." Develops over use.

Reflective — the meaning attached to owning or using it. "This says something about who I am / what I value." The slowest, deepest level.
Successful products typically work at all three levels. An iPhone is visceral (sleek, jewel-like), behavioural (responsive, tactile), and reflective (status symbol, personal device).
Product semantics
Product semantics is the study of how products communicate meaning through form, colour, texture, and detail. Every design decision sends signals:
- Sharp angles suggest precision, technology, speed
- Curves suggest warmth, comfort, nature
- Matte surfaces suggest professionalism; glossy surfaces suggest luxury or youth
- Exposed screws suggest honesty and repair; hidden fastenings suggest refinement
Good designers use these signals intentionally. Mismatched semantics (a medical device styled like a toy) confuses users.
Aesthetic experience
Aesthetics is not decoration — it is essential. Users perceive aesthetically pleasing products as:
- Easier to use (even when objectively they are not)
- More trustworthy
- Higher quality
- Worth more money
This is the aesthetic-usability effect: users forgive aesthetic products small usability flaws that would annoy them in ugly products. Beauty is not optional.
Sensory design
Products are experienced through all senses:
- Sight — form, colour, material, surface
- Touch — texture, temperature, weight, vibration
- Hearing — click, whirr, thud, silence
- Smell — new-car smell, leather, wood
- Taste — rare in products but matters in food, medicine, packaging
Designers who attend to multiple senses create richer experiences. The "click" of a premium pen, the satisfying weight of a well-made knife, the scent of freshly cut wood — all contribute.
Product personality and identity
Products have personalities. A Volvo feels safe, steady, honest. A Ferrari feels aggressive, intense, elite. An iPhone feels confident and minimalist. A Nintendo console feels playful and approachable.
Personality comes from consistent decisions across form, interaction, material, sound, and language. It must align with brand identity and user aspirations.
Meaning and culture
Products carry cultural meaning:
- Heritage brands (Leica, Rolex, Moleskine) trade on history
- Minimalist design signals quality in some contexts, coldness in others
- Traditional craft signals authenticity and care
- High-tech aesthetics signal modernity and progress
Designers choosing semantic directions shape user perception — powerful, and potentially manipulative.
Case studies
Apple retail experience — every surface, sound, scent, and gesture in Apple stores is designed. The tactile weight of a MacBook, the spacing of the products, the staff scripts — all work together to create aspiration and trust.
Dieter Rams and Braun — established a design language of calm functionalism. Minimal ornament, honest materials, subtle details. Influenced Apple, Muji, thousands of others. A masterclass in consistent product semantics.
Tesla Cybertruck — deliberately divisive aesthetics. Sharp, angular, dystopian. Signals disruption and technical confidence. Emotional response is polarised by design.
Fisher-Price children's products — behavioural and visceral design for children. Bright primary colours, rounded forms, tactile satisfaction. Aesthetics tuned for early-years developmental psychology.
Muji household goods — minimalism as philosophy. Products almost invisible in use, packaging stripped of branding. Reflective-level design: ownership signals identity (thoughtful, deliberate) without ostentation.

Physio-pleasure: the weight, the texture of the grip, the sound and feel of the closing lid, the temperature of the material in the hand. Socio-pleasure: a form and finish that signals membership of a group — a gym, a cycling club, a workplace. Psycho-pleasure: opening and sealing it one-handed without spillage, so use is effortless and the user feels competent. Ideo-pleasure: stainless steel rather than plastic, repairable seals, and a visible statement about single-use plastic. The design decision is which to prioritise: a bottle optimised for ideo-pleasure may be heavier and less pleasant to hold, trading physio- for ideo-pleasure deliberately.
2. Suggest how the ACT model could improve a self-service supermarket checkout.
Attract (desirability): clear, uncluttered stations that look faster than the staffed queue, so users choose them. Converse (usability): unambiguous prompts, immediate feedback when an item registers, and errors that explain themselves rather than freezing and calling an attendant. Transact (usefulness): payment completes and the receipt is delivered without the user needing help — the promise made at the attract stage is kept. Most self-checkout frustration is a converse-stage failure: the machine attracts users with the promise of speed, then breaks the conversation with unexplained weight errors, so the transaction is never completed independently.

Visceral: immediate gut response to appearance (iPhone's sleek, jewel-like form attracts instantly). Behavioural: response to use (iPhone's smooth gesture interactions feel satisfying). Products that work at only one level (ugly but functional, or beautiful but frustrating) rarely achieve emotional connection.

Attractive products get more patience from users; they forgive small flaws that would be rejected in ugly products. The implication: aesthetics is not decoration — it is essential to usability. Designers who treat visual design as optional produce products users abandon at the first frustration. Beauty and function reinforce each other.

Product semantics is the study of meaning communicated through form, colour, texture, and detail. Visceral: the smartphone is designed to look desirable, intimate, premium — users are drawn to it visually. The garden fork is designed to look sturdy and purposeful — visual appeal is functional, not seductive. Behavioural: the smartphone's smooth responsive interaction is designed to feel pleasurable; the fork's satisfaction comes from the tactile feedback of effective work (soil yielding). Reflective: smartphone ownership carries identity signals (status, taste, values); a garden fork rarely does, unless the user values craft or heritage tools. Different product categories engage the three levels very differently.
