C1.1 — Responsibility of the designer

Key concepts

Every design decision has consequences beyond the product. A material chosen for aesthetics drives demand for a supply chain. A lifespan limited by planned obsolescence produces waste at scale. An interface designed to maximise engagement shapes user behaviour. Designers are rarely neutral — their choices ripple outward.

The designer's responsibility is to acknowledge these consequences and take them seriously. Not every consequence can be eliminated, but every consequence should be considered.

Categories of responsibility

Ethical responsibilities — avoiding harm, respecting dignity, designing honestly rather than deceptively. Not tricking users. Not designing products that exploit vulnerable users.

Social responsibilities — considering who is included and who is excluded; respecting labour rights in the supply chain; avoiding products that entrench inequality.

Environmental responsibilities — minimising resource extraction, pollution, and waste; choosing materials and processes that reduce environmental damage.

Economic responsibilities — producing products at fair prices, paying fair wages, avoiding exploitative business models.

These categories overlap. A designer cannot optimise one without affecting the others. The triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) captures this interconnection.

Planned obsolescence

Planned obsolescence is the deliberate limiting of a product's useful life to encourage replacement. It takes several forms:

Planned obsolescence is profitable. It is also environmentally damaging and socially questionable. Designers who enable it share responsibility for its consequences.

Social impact of design

Products can: - Empower or disenfranchise users (good UI vs dark patterns) - Unite or divide communities (public spaces that welcome or exclude) - Educate or manipulate (honest advertising vs misleading packaging)

Designers ask: who benefits, and who is harmed? Who is represented, and who is missing?

Designer as agent of change

Designers are not just executors of client requirements. They shape culture. Choosing a recycled material creates demand; designing repairability normalises it; specifying inclusive interfaces teaches the industry what's possible.

Individual decisions aggregate. A single designer specifying low-carbon concrete makes little difference; 10,000 designers doing so reshapes the concrete industry.

Ethical dilemmas

Designers face real tensions:

No perfect answers. The point is to recognise the dilemma and reason about it openly.

Case studies

Apple right-to-repair battles — Apple has historically opposed laws requiring companies to make repair accessible. Critics argue this entrenches planned obsolescence. Apple argues repair quality must be controlled. Genuine ethical tension between corporate control and environmental responsibility.

Phoebus cartel (1924–1939) — major lightbulb manufacturers agreed to cap bulb lifetimes at 1,000 hours, shortening product life to drive replacement sales. One of the earliest documented cases of planned obsolescence as industrial policy.

Volkswagen emissions scandal (2015) — engineers designed software to cheat emissions tests. Individual engineers, designers, and managers all made decisions that contributed. A case study in how distributed responsibility becomes no responsibility.

Nest learning thermostat — designed to reduce household energy consumption through smart scheduling. Illustrates designers using their skills for environmental benefit. Also raises privacy questions about data collection.

Fairphone — deliberately designed for repair, modular upgrade, and conflict-free materials. A product built around the designer's ethical responsibilities.

Approach: identify the harm (addiction risk, financial damage); consider alternatives (transparent odds, loss-limit tools); weigh professional responsibility (code of conduct) against commercial pressure; decide whether to refuse, modify, or proceed with harm-mitigation designs. The ethical designer is one who recognises the dilemma rather than treating it as a neutral brief.

4. Evaluate the claim that designers share responsibility for the environmental impact of their products.

The argument for: designers specify materials, shape lifespans, and define end-of-life pathways. These choices materially affect environmental outcomes. A designer who ignores these consequences delegates them to someone else. The argument against: designers operate under client and market constraints; they cannot unilaterally choose sustainability if customers won't pay for it. A balanced view: designers have partial but real responsibility — they are one of many actors, but among those most capable of changing outcomes through specification choices. Pretending they bear no responsibility conflicts with the evidence of their influence.

Product stewardship

Product stewardship means whoever designs, produces, sells, or uses a product takes responsibility for minimising its environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Typically the producer has greatest responsibility (most control over materials, process, lifespan), but all stakeholders share it:

Triple Bottom Line (TBL)

Instead of measuring only profit (economic), TBL measures three dimensions:

Use TBL Venn diagrams to analyse companies (Nike, McDonald's) or your own IA product. Ask: what do they need to consider in the present? How can they enact positive change in the future?

Case study: Tony's Chocolonely

Built its entire brand around TBL — eliminating slavery from cocoa supply chains (people), reducing environmental impact of chocolate production (planet), while remaining profitable. Made ethical sourcing their USP.

iPhone and global supply chains

Apple works with suppliers in 43 countries across 6 continents to make iPhones. A single product depends on an enormous global supply chain. Use this to discuss: - Why isn't everything made in one place? (cost, expertise, scale) - What forms of transport are involved? - What happens when supply chains break? - How does this relate to sustainability?

Planned vs perceived obsolescence

Both are linked: planned obsolescence drives replacement; perceived obsolescence is marketing's job to accelerate it.

EU Right to Repair

The EU's 2024+ legislation requires manufacturers to make spare parts, manuals, and repair tools available for common consumer products (phones, appliances). Shifts responsibility from consumer to manufacturer and is reshaping product design.

Research task — redesign for obsolescence resistance

Pick a product (watch, toothbrush, trainers, console, headphones, kettle). Redesign it to tackle both planned and perceived obsolescence, following EU right-to-repair legislation. Create a short ACCESS FM pitch presentation, considering modularity, repairability, upgradeability, constituent parts, supply chain, and TBL.

Quality Assurance (QA) vs Quality Control (QC)

Product recalls result from QA failures, not QC failures. They are expensive and damage brand reputation.
